The Orkney islands were home to the British fleet during both world wars and as a consequence there are a vast number of defensive military structures including, Gun Batteries, a Z Rocket battery, Airfields, Pillboxes, Radar stations, Air raid shelters and no doubt loads of other things.

Perhaps the most famous wartime survival is the Italian Chapel on Lamb holm. This was built by Italian POWs who were helping to build the Churchill Barriers which join the Islands of Lamb holm, Glimps Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay to Mainland. These barriers were a massive project and They were completed in 1945.
